I've been struggling a lot lately with the amount of selfishness that Americans posses, myself included. I simply log into Facebook these days, and am bombarded with complaints from every direction. Even people whom I know to be Christians don't seem to care about much more than what they had for dinner, how someone is being mean to them, or how their technology is being stupid and they hate it. And maybe that's what Facebook is really about. I just wish it wasn't.
I read a quote a while back by Eleanor Roosevelt that really stuck with me. She said something to the effect of "Small minds discuss people, Average minds discuss events, but Great minds discuss IDEAS."
Looking around, most people seem to have small or average minds. We don't talk about Ideas much. Not big ideas, life and world changing ideas. When someone starts talking about something big like that, we tend to change the subject or walk away. We don't want to think about changing our world with big Ideas. We think that people who have these Ideas are crazy and weird.
Well, call me crazy, but I want to talk about these Ideas. I have lots. Some of them most likely will fall down the drain and never make it past the planning stage, but I have them. And I want to talk about them.
But talking about them makes them real. Often, I don’t feel like I can talk about ideas as just ideas. If I talk about them, they are suddenly something that is going to happen.
Shouldn’t we be able to have ideas, and talk about them, and disregard the ones that don’t work? Just a thought. Another something that has stuck with me the last few days was something that Katie Davis said (surprise! Haha). She was talking in an interview or something and said that God doesn’t ask that we care for the orphans and widows, He demands it. So why don’t we, as Christians, demand it too? We claim to follow Christ. But are we really? Or are we saying, “Thanks, God, for saving me from my sins, now I’m gonna just go on my way and live a happy little life.”
I’m not saying everyone completely blows off God’s callings. But maybe we are so caught up in our everyday lives that we miss God’s still small voice calling us, and occasionally find time to write a check to support organizations working toward bettering our world.
I’m scared that I’ll be so caught up in my own dreams, that I’ll miss what God wants from me.
And sometimes I feel like I’ve already missed it.
I want to have ideas that I can talk about freely. Ideas that grow and change as they start to come about.
Ideas that will change the world.
Let's talk about ideas. :)
